Waits racks up another win at Deer Creek

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. — Mother Nature gave the track crew fits this week by dumping almost 4” of rain in a short amount of time on Thursday afternoon followed up by a day of light drizzle on Friday. Saturday morning after a review of a game plan for the day, the track crew tackled the project of trying to get Deer Creek Speedway in race condition for another great Saturday night of racing. In times like this it is great to have a crew of good people to help out and we can’t forget to thank them. Fitzpatrick Construction for the Cat Grader and Joe Fitzpatrick for all the hours on the blade. Hyland Motors for the tractors to use during track prep time, Elcor Construction for the use of additional equipment during the packing operations. Operators who help out with their time, Richard Chinnow and also Kim Crawford of KC lawn Care who put hours in on the equipment. Without them Saturday night definitely would not have happened this week.

After receiving a used Kraft Kar from Tommy Myer last week Ben Rippentrop sat on the pole for the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified feature and took an early lead followed by Brian Shaw and Brad Waits. With two laps completed Waits moved into second while Steve Wetzstein and Mike Sorensen rounded out the top five spot. A restart with twenty two to go saw Waits fly by Rippentrop up around the wall of the speedway. A nasty wreck happened next as Dave Wytaske Jr. took a series of nasty barrel rolls down the back straight. Looks like the car will need some work before it is able to hit the track again but Wytaske Jr. was uninjured. On the restart Waits took the lead with Rippentrop in second, Sorensen in third and Wetzstein moved past Shaw on the outside for fourth. Sorensen dropped low on the track to work on Rippentrop only to have Wetzstein fly by him up high. Sorensen moved up top after being passed and worked past Rippentrop only to have Jason Cummins start pressuring him on the low side. A restart with eleven to go saw Waits continue to lead with Wetzstein trying to get around him on the high side. Jason Cummins still tried to work past Sorensen for third as Tim Donlinger rounded out the top five after getting under Rippentrop late in the race. Waits held on for his second win of the season.
