Sorensen takes checkers in USRA Modified action at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. — A perfect day greeted a good field of cars and a nice crowd on Domaille Collision and John Gardner Cabinet night at the speedway. Also on hand for the night was the Minnesota Pork Producers who gave away free Pork Loin samples to those in attendance at the track.
The open-wheeled EZ Fabricating USRA Modifieds were the last on the track with Mike Sorensen using the outside front row to take the early lead.
Brad Bakken and Todd Scharkey made light contact down the back straight as they raced for second, Bakken dropped back slightly from the contact with Brad Waits moving into third.
Mike Hejna moved into fourth early with three and four wide battles through the corners early on.
A restart with 20 to go saw Sorensen lead with heavy pressure from Waits with Steve Wetzstein using the high line to move up into the top-5.
With 17 to go, Wetzstein moved past Scharkey for fourth after Hejna completed a pass for third.
Sorensen continued to lead as he ran mid-track while Waits moved from the bottom early on up to the top side of the track, but was unable to get cleanly alongside of the leader.
A couple more quick cautions saw five laps dropped from the length of the race with Sorensen still leading at the wire.
Hejna was able to complete a late pass for second with Waits in third.
Next week Deer Creek Speedway will play host to the Tri-Star Late Model Challenge Series on Saturday night with a huge field of cars expected as all five classes race in action at the speedway all vying for the increased purses in all classes.
