Wetzstein ends Deer Creek drought

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - With upper-seventies temperature (a rarity in July in Minnesota) with a cool breeze it was a prefect night for racing in southern Minnesota.  Whitewater Wireless and Clements Auto were the nightly sponsor as 104 cars checked into the back gate.

Some nights the fans call the USRA Modifieds “restartifieds” as they always seem to have three or four cautions.  But not tonight as the feature event went green to checkers without a hint of a yellow flag waving.

Kelly Shryock started on the pole driving the Ron Frericks owned #21h car normally driven by Jim Horejsi.  Steve Wetzstein started on the outside of the front row looking for his first win at the speedway since 2002.

Wetzstein took a slight advantage on lap one with Mike Sorensen in third, Brad waits fourth and Bob Timm quickly moved into the top five.  Timm took over fourth from Waits on lap five using the extreme bottom of the speedway.  Up front Wetzstein continued to lead with Shryock close and even pulling alongside a few times but not able to get completely alongside of the leader.

With 13 to go lapped traffic started to come into play with Wetzstein working them perfectly.  Three laps later, Wetzstein pulled out to a small lead while Waits started making a higher groove work again.  Seven to go and Timm pulled up close to Shryock for second after clearing Sorensen three laps earlier.  Waits worked back into the top-5 with five to go.

At the line it was Wetzstein with the win, Shryock in second, Timm, Sorensen and Waits rounded out the top-5.
