Upper Iowa Speedway checkers wave for Krauskopf, Broszeit, Hare, Hovden
DECORAH, Iowa - With the 2007 Nordic Fest celebration in full swing, area race fans took a break from “festing” to take in some fantastic Iowa dirt short track racing this past Saturday night at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway. With the season winding down, point battles are tight and the racing continues to be ultra-competitive.
Sunoco Racing Fuel USRA Hobby Stocks – Danny Sacquinte grabbed the lap one lead in the USRA Hobby Stock feature, just before a lap two caution flew for a multi-car incident in corner two involving Scott Fjelstul, Brad Darling and Andy Stinson. On the re-start, Jesse Holzer moved to second and Brandon Hare to third. After Holzer moved to the lead, a second caution flew for another multi-car incident, sending Nick Rask to the pits and Chris Busch to the back of the pack. A third caution flew when Adam Cline and Kent Dornink got together. Cline’s bad luck wasn’t over, as he and Steve Larson made hard contact with three laps to go. Holzer, Hare and Chris Hovden went three wide following the re-start with three laps to go, and with the white flag waving, Hare jumped to the bottom and got beside Holzer and they crossed the flag just that way, with Hare winning by inches in a thriller.
Sim’s TV and Electronics Outlaw Hobbys – Cody Cook started inside pole in the Outlaw Hobby feature and shot to the lead early. A caution flew on lap two for a spin by Pete Solum. Point leader Mitch Hovden jumped to second following the re-start and was putting lots of heat on Cook for the lead. On lap four, Hovden powered past the lead the way. Danny Cole, Jr., who is running strong the second half of this season, moved his #00 to third. At the half, a three-wide battle for second between Cole, Cook and Austin Curtin was eventually won by Austin Curtin. In the closing laps, Curtin was making up ground on the leader but simply ran out of laps as Hovden claimed yet another win and further extended his point lead for the year.
Bill’s Auto Repair USRA B-Mods – The USRA B-Mod feature got off to a bit of a messy start when Shane Panos spun in corner three, ending up in the mud that was left over from the recent heavy rains. On the re-start, Jimmy Broszeit shot past Jim Erickson for the lead. Chris Fretheim spun, bringing out a second caution. Junior Boyer and Matt Jones, who are always seemingly moving forward, moved to second and third following the re-start. A third caution flew when Elmer Hansen stopped due to apparent mechanical problems. Boyer and Jones fought throughout the remainder of the event for second, with Jones eventually grabbing the runner up spot, but the lead was all Broszeit’s who was all smiles after claiming his first feature win of this 2007 season.
Decorah Chiropractic USRA Stock Cars – Brian Mahlstedt’s lead in the Stock Car feature was short lived thanks to Kurt Krauskopf who moved out front on lap two. As usual, point leader Dan Jones was maneuvering his way to the front, and grabbed second on lap five. Don Rude has had his #44 running very well lately, and that trend continued as he moved along side Jones for second near the halfway point. They would continue for three or four laps until Rude made the bottom work, grabbing second, but the lead was all Krauskopf’s who took home a very nice trophy for his efforts.
