Deer Creek Speedway readies for invitational season

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Southern Minnesota was hit with one of those incredible storms over the weekend. On Saturday morning, the crews arrived with a light rain coming down and by the time lunch had rolled around, the Southern Minnesota Speedplant had accumulated over 2” of rain in the gauge. As of Sunday morning the speedway had received 7” of rain as all of Southestern Minnesota sat in a flood watch. Hopefully no fans, drivers or supporters of the speedway felt heavy damage due to the mass flooding in the area.

Thankfully the speedway did not see any damages due to the weather and the Deer Creek which runs along the edge of the property stayed within its banks with all of the rain and runoff coming downstream.

The season is rapidly winding down and the invitational part of the season is upon the speedway. The 25th of August will see the drivers take to the high banked speedway as they finish out the season with the Season Championship night. True to the color of regular racing action the championship night will use the standard invert system as used throughout the season. Racing action in all four classes of the Amsoil Dirt Track Series will be on hand to determine the champions of the Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Models, US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks, Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and the Tim’s Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks. Also in action will be the EZ Fabricating USRA Modifieds. Championship night is also a part of the DRIVER’S FREE MONTH with all driver’s receiving their entry back at the check in shack courtesy of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Olympic Fire and Protection, Dirt Doctor Trucking and Greenway Co-Op. The month of August is also kid’s free month with all kids 12 and under receiving free admittance to the speedway along with a free popsicle and special drawings all night long for the kids.

The first night of non-regular racing action will be Labor Day weekend with the Baudoin Oil Labor Day Dual. Racing action will start at 5:00 on Saturday September 1st with racing action on the speedway provided by the Polydome World Dirt Racing League and the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series. Both series are quickly winding down their point chases with many former area and regional drivers performing well in both series. With only eight races left heading into the Labor Day weekend the WDRL point leader is Brian Harris leading by a small margin over Mound MN Justin Fegers with John Kaanta and Eric Pember following closely behind. A strong contingent of local racers are expected to challenge the traveling veterans around the high banked speedway including the defending race champion Lance Matthees who shocked the crowd with the win last season. Thirty two cars checked in last season for the Polydome portion of the race. The O’Reilly Auto Parts USMTS Series will again join the Late Models in the special dual event. Last year forty one cars checked into the back gate for the modified portion of the event with Kelly Shryock taking home the win. This year a slightly larger field of cars are expected to be in the area as they ready for the upcoming 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree the following weekend which features the O’Reilly USMTS division. Pre-Sale Adult and kids tickets are available until the end of the day on August 29th. Get your reserved tickets now for this exciting dual event at the speedway. With over 110 drivers currently pre-registered for the USMTS division the event is sure to be one the biggest modified car count in the Midwest with the richest purse to be paid out to the modified division alone.
