CRESCO, Iowa — Three days of nail-biting action is in the books, and five champions of the first-ever Cresco USRA Nationals were crowned Saturday at the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway. Taking home the hardware were Zack VanderBeek (USRA Modifieds), Tory Reicks (USRA Stock Cars), Jimmy Davis (USRA B-Mods), Chris Hovden (USRA Hobby Stocks) and Justin Elsbernd (Outlaw Hobbys).

Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon captured the pole for the USRA Modified main event by winning the preliminary feature on Thursday, then led every lap of Saturday's finale to pocket the $5,000 top prize. Despite going wire to wire, VanderBeek had to hold off early challenges from Ventura's Al Hejna and Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., then a late-race charge by Ryan York of Racine, Minn., who settled for the runner-up finish. Tim Donlinger of Rochester, Minn., took third, while Hejna and Darrin Walch of Postville rounded out the top-5 finishers.

In USRA Stock Car action, Tory Reicks of Waucoma garnered the $2,000 winner's share of the purse by holding off Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., and seventh-starting Matt Greiner of Washington for the win. Cresco's Shay Curtin came home in fourth and Kevin Bidne of Decorah finished fifth. Tom Schmitt of Independence — the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national champion in the Stock Car class — started on the outside of the front row, but battled an ill-handling car to a sixth-place finish.

Jimmy Davis of Medford, Minn., topped the $1,000-to-win USRA B-Mod championship race after starting fifth on the grid. Dan Wheeler of Columbia Heights, Minn., who started seventh, gave chase but had to settle for the runner-up finish at the checkers. Brett Moffitt of Grimes grabbed third, followed by Calmar's Junior Boyer in fourth and Tim Heins of Elkrader in the fifth spot.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature gave the hometown fans something to cheer about as Cresco's Chris Hovden walked away with the $1,000 top prize by holding off Scott Spilde of Ridgeway. Brandon Hare of Elma was third, Steve Holthaus of Cresco grabbed fourth and Decorah's Kyle Anderson completed the top-5.

Outlaw Hobby action saw Justin Elsbernd of Runnells capture the win and $1,000 winner's check. Mitch Hovden of Decorah finished second, followed by Josh Ludeking of Decorah in third, Ben Moudry of Protivin in fourth and Postville's Cody Henkes in fifth.

The inaugural Cresco USRA Nationals wrapped up the racing events for the 2007 season at the 4/10-mile high-banked speedplant at the Mighty Howard County Fairgrounds. Banquet information and a schedule of events for 2008 will be released in the near future.
