Dalton wins fourth straight in Springfield nail-biter

Defending Out-Pace USRA B-Mod track champion Jackie Dalton of Carthage was able to pull off a last-lap pass of Sam Petty as the duo took the white flag Saturday night to capture his fourth straight victory at the Springfield Raceway.

After two intense qualifying heats captured by Dalton and Petty, the redraw inverted the top 2 rows for the scheduled 20-lap feature.

James Thompson and Aaron Scroggins brought the pack to the green with Scroggins getting the top spot on the top groove of the multi-grooved surface as Thompson stayed to low side while Petty—who has never captured a B-Mod feature win here—was showing strength after dropping a valve last week.

On lap 2, rookie Ryan Stacye looped it in turn 1 slowing the pace as his night ended with problems. On the restart, Petty made the move around Thompson with Dalton looking for running room.

With two- and three-wide racing around all over the pack, Petty was able to get the bottom lane working and after a door-to-door battle with Scroggins, nosed ahead to sneak in the top spot as Dalton was riding in the shadows looking for an opening even though the track was racy all over.

Heading into the final five laps of the quick-paced feature, lapped traffic lurked ahead of the field as Petty was holding Dalton and Scroggins at bay. Dalton tried the low lane, middle lane and then found an opening with two laps remaining around Scroggins as Thompson was waiting in the wings for something to happen up front.

With Petty locked on the bottom groove, Dalton swung high to the very edge of the top groove and pulled even with Petty as the white flew. Petty carried a strong line down low, but Dalton rode the top side and nipped Petty for the win while Scroggins was a close third. Thompson and Michael Bowers completed a tough top 5.
