Waits closes in on track championship with fourth win at Deer Creek

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - It was a picture perfect night for the second-to-last night of track points at the Deer Creek Speedway.

The EZ Fabricating USRA Modifieds definitely did not want to be left out of the exciting feature racing action that had already taken place.

Front row starters Todd Scharkey and Brad Waits would see to that.

What a race up front to start, Scharkey and Waits exchanged some incredible clean slide jobs and swapped the lead several times early in the race. Scharkey had the lead and Waits followed around on the blistering fast cushion. A caution on lap eight would change the complexion of the race.

Waits swung to the low side in turn one and pulled off another beautiful pass for the lead bolting by Scharkey.

Then it was Steve Arpin’s turn to challenge Scharkey for second. Bob Timm was moving as well and he along with Arpin got by Scharkey for second an third. As the race resumed it was apparent that Arpin had plenty of snuff to keep up with the speedy Waits.

Arpin ran the bottom and Waits stuck to the top of the track. Arpin would have the advantage and then Waits. Timm made it a three car race up front as he was glued to Arpin’s bumper. Arpin and Timm both snuck by Waits and were now first and second.

Another yellow with six to go set up a great shootout for the win. Arpin and Timm held their ground on the bottom as Timm was now challenging for the win.

Waits was still quick on the top and was moving in.

The white flag flew and Waits got a great run off the top of turn 2. Waits blitzed by both Timm and Arpin and then shot to the bottom in turn 3.

Waits slid to the top in turn 4 as Arpin gave it one last shot. Waits won by a half-car-length over Arpin with Timm right with them in third.

It was Waits’ fourth win at Deer Creek.

Rounding out the top-5 were Jason Cummins and Scharkey.

Racing resumes next Saturday, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m. for the final night of track points. It is also the final Drivers Free Entry event, compliments of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Fastenal, Olympic Fire Protection and Heartland Fuels.

Then on Sunday it is another full show with all five classes in action starting at 5 p.m.
