Timms wins USRA Modified thriller at Lucas Oil Speedway

Coming out of turn four on the final lap, Randy Timms made the fifth and final lead change of the race stick and nipped Lucas Gibbs for the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified feature victory Friday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway.

Timms, of Wheatland, Okla., lost the lead to Gibbs as the two took the white flag.

But Timms, in his first race of the season, was determined to come away first to the checkers and won by 0.386 seconds.

"I felt like I had a pretty good rhythm going and didn't really feel any pressure," Timms said. "Then, just out of the blue, he got a run on me and I was like 'damn, that's the last lap.'

"I wasn't going to give it away. He was going to have to earn it."

Timms and Gibbs started on the front row and it was Timms getting the jump to lead lap one before the two swapped positions the next time around.

One lap later, Timms regained the lead on a restart.

Timms held it from there until lap 19, when Gibbs dove to the inside to lead with one to go.

But Timms came out on top for the $750 prize as the drivers earned points toward the starting field for Saturday night's $1,500-to-win, 30-lap feature at the Lucas Oil Show-Me 100.

Joe Duvall, who owns the car Timms was driving, finished third with Ryan Middaugh fourth and Dillon McCowan in fifth.

Chad Wheeler charged to sixth from his 20th starting position.

Both the Late Models and USRA Modifieds were back in action late Friday night in the "Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson" portion of the weekend.

Lee Greenwood part of Saturday festivities: In addition to the racing on Saturday night, CMA and ACM Country Music Male Vocalist of the Year, Grammy Award winner and American Patriot Lee Greenwood will serve as Grand Marshall for the action.

Greenwood will sing the National Anthem during opening ceremonies and also his iconic song "God Bless the USA," after driver introductions just prior to the green flag falling to begin the 100-lap feature.
