Hovdens take two at Upper Iowa Speedway; Broszeit bags B-Mod main

DECORAH, Iowa - Following last week’s cancellation due to poor weather, it was back to business this past Saturday night at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway as picture perfect skies greeted a packed grandstand for some fantastic racing. There were thrills and spills and first time winners. How did your favorite driver do? Let’s take a look ...

Fink’s Farm and Home Hobby Stocks – twenty-two cars started the Hobby Stock feature, and it would finish caution free with one of the most exciting races you will ever see. Nick Schwebach showed the way early on, but the man on the man on the move was Kyle Anderson who had his Ford working very well as he passed Kyle Frye for second and shortly after Schwebach for the lead. Point leader Chris Hovden was showing his muscle as well, moving to second while Adam Cline took third. About the time Anderson was moving into lap traffic, Hovden had caught him and the two would put on quite a show, slicing and dicing through lap traffic, one going high and the other low around the slower cars. Cline would out maneuver Anderson as well in the final laps, taking second, and Hovden drove a pure masterpiece in the final lap as he continued to seemingly know every move to make through lap traffic as he claimed the win and lengthened his point lead.

American Family Insurance/Chris Smock Agency B-Mods – a nasty, five car pile-up slowed the start of the B-Mod feature in corner one on the first lap. Boyd Halverson, Brian Mahlstedt and Greg Mitchell all received substantial damage from the crash. Following the full re-start, it was Chris Fretheim showing the way with Jim Erickson running a close second. Eric Verthein then maneuvered his #16 to second while Junior Boyer found himself in third. Just when Verthein was going low for the lead, Erickson spun to bring out a caution. Shortly following, Andy Kelly brought out a second caution for a spin of his own. Boyer would overtake the lead following the re-start, with Verthein close behind. Jimmy Broszeit moved his #88X into third as the laps wound down. A final caution flew when Jeremy Schaufenbuel had problems in corner three with four laps to go. Broszeit shot to the lead on the re-start, but Boyer would battle back and the two would take the white flag door to door. Broszeit appeared to have the edge coming out of two but Boyer made a hard charge down the backstretch and came out of corner four with the lead en route to his first feature win of the year, taking it in thrilling fashion.

Letterwerks Sign City Stock Cars – Mitch Hovden quickly moved to the lead in the Stock Car feature with Kyle Falck taking second. Danny Cole, Jr. had his #00 working on the high side and moved to third. A scary moment then occurred when Jake Lampert got loose coming out of corner two, his car got sideways and rolled. His roll cage failed above the driver’s door, but he was uninjured. His car, however, suffered severe damage. After the re-start, Hovden would continue to lead while Cole moved to second. A great three wide battle for four then took place that was eventually won by Jake Ludeking. Ludeking then got past Falck for third. In the final five laps, Cole appeared to be closing slightly on the leader but it wasn’t enough as Hovden claimed his first ever UIS Stock Car feature win.
