Upper Iowa Speedway checkers wave for Krauskopf, Mitchell, Spilde

DECORAH, Iowa - Week to week, the racing at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway is as good as it gets. Well, as good as it gets unless the Modifieds are in town, which was the case this past Saturday night as the boys of the USMTS hit town.

In what has become an annual big-time show, another jam-packed grandstand showed up again this time around to see what all the fuss was about.

Did they leave disappointed? Hardly. The show also included Hornets, B-Mods, and Stock Cars, who did their part, as well, in keeping the fans entertained. A class-by-class review of all the thrills and spills include ...

USRA Hobby Stocks – Danny Sacquintne has had a bit of a rough start to the UIS 2009 season, but he was back to his 2008 form at the start of the Hobby feature as he shot to an early lead. Following a strong run last week, Scott Spilde had his #18 wound up yet again as he moved to second. A spin in corner four brought out an early caution. Sacquintne led following the re-start with Spilde close behind. Dan Hovden then spun on the front stretch, bringing out a second caution. Following the re-start, Kyle Anderson had moved his Ford into the battle for the lead, catching Sacquintne and Spilde. Brandon Hare kicked a barrier tire up on the track, bringing out a third caution. Following the re-start, there was a multi-car mishap on the backstretch. When the race re-started, Spilde went to the low side and grabbed the lead from Sacquintne and held off at least four hard charging cars to claim his first feature win of the season.

USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mods – following a lap one re-start, it was Brian Schrage showing the way in the early running of the B-Mod feature event. Close behind, Jimmy Broszeit and Eric Verthein were battling for second. Mike Kelly had problems in corner four, bringing out the first caution. After the re-start, Matt Jones brought his #23 from nowhere to join the front group as they battled for the lead. Soon after, a spin by Jim Erickson brought out another caution. Jones moved to the low side to take the lead while Greg Mitchell used the top side to take second. They would battle back and forth, side by side, both grabbing the lead but when the checkers flew it was Mitchell holding off Jones for his first feature win of the year.

USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars – Jake Ludeking started pole in the Stock Car feature and led early on while last week’s winner Mitch Hovden shot to second. While Hovden was peeking low for the lead, a caution flew for a tangle between Kevin Donlan and Mike Krambeer. After the re-start, it was Ludeking continuing to show the way while Hovden, Austin Curtin and Tory Reicks battled for second. Curtin would eventually take second and jumped to the high side to try to take the lead and would successfully do so. Another caution flew when Brent Tweten and Ludeking got together. After the re-start, it was mayhem up front as Curtin, Kyle Falck, Kurt Krauskopf, Brian Gjere and Reicks all battled for the lead. When the checkers flew, it was Krauskopf holding off Curtin for his second feature win of the season.
