Krausopf, Jones, Spilde claim Thursday night wins at Upper Iowa Speedway

DECORAH, Iowa - With the Winneshiek County Fair in full swing, the Upper Iowa Speedway hosted a rare Thursday night event and gave fair-goers a heck of a show in the process. The season is moving by quickly, and competitors are already starting to feel an urgency to perform well to position themselves for a strong stretch run of the 2009 season. How did your favorite driver do? Well, let’s take a look ...

USRA Hobby Stocks: Dan Hovden led in the early running of the feature until a caution flew when Darren Vick and Justin Hanson tangled. Following the restart, Hovden was challenged by Scott Spilde who would eventually take the lead. A second caution flew for an incident involving Denise Krauskopf. While Hovden’s chance at the win would die thanks to a flat tire, a great battle was setting up for second through fourth between Adam Cline, Kyle Anderson and points leader Chris Hovden. Anderson would eventually secure second while Chris Hovden took third and Cline fourth. However, the lead was all Spilde’s who went on to claim his second feature win of the season, and move to second in points, just nine behind Chris Hovden. Top-10 finishers: Spilde, Anderson, C Hovden, Cline, Larson, D Hovden, Schwebach, Stinson, Lewis, Moellers.

USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mods: Jimmy Broszeit got tagged on the first lap of the feature, bringing out an early caution. He would, however, continue. Following the restart, Andrew Kelly and Junior Boyer battled for the lead. A second caution then flew for debris on the track. Following the restart, Boyer assumed the lead but not for long as a hard-charging Matt Jones had his #23 was on the move yet again as he shot past Boyer to the front of the pack. A third caution then flew for an incident involving Jim Erickson. Jones led following the restart until a fourth caution flew for a corner 4 spin by Justin Lewis with five laps remaining. Kelly’s great run unfortunately came to an abrupt end when a blown engine sent him to the pits. Jones, however, was rock solid throughout as he cruised to the win, finishing ahead of Boyer and last week’s winner, Eric Verthein. Top-10 finishers: Jones, Boyer, Verthein, Kelly, Broszeit, Schrage, Freilinger, Deering, Moudry, Panos.

USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars: the feature got off to a precarious start when an eight-car incident occurred on lap 1. Following the restart, another caution flew when Shawn Bangs and Austin Curtin both spun. Kurt Krauskopf, who started 12th, had his #60 on the move. There would be yet more cautions, including a five-car pile-up on the front stretch, but when it was all said and done it was Krauskopf holding off Lynn Panos and Dan Christopher to claim another win and extend his points lead on second place Mitch Hovden. Top-10 finishers: Krauskopf, Panos, Christopher, Falck, Reicks, Webb, Bergan, Ludeking, Solum, Cole.
