CRESCO, Iowa - The American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series was back in action Sunday on the lightning-fast 4/10-mile clay oval of the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, with another "Licensed to Thrill" night featuring free grandstand admission to residents of Decorah and Waukon.

In the USRA Modified feature, Ron Konkel of Caledonia, Minn., captured the main event as he held off defending track champion Darrin Walch and 2008 Southern Iowa Speedway track champion Colt Mather, Jacob Dahle and 2007 Cresco Speedway USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Bod track titleist Tim Heins.

A stout field of 21 entries were on hand in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car class, with Brian Gjere of Mabel, Minn., taking down the win. Patty Fosaaen grabbed the runner-up spot, followed by Bryan Webb, Mitch Hovden and Jake Ludeking.

The second-generation driver from Waterloo held off tenth-starting Matt Jones over the final laps, with Eric Verthein coming from eighth to finish third, Brian Mahlstadt fourth and Brian Schrage in fifth.

Nathan Wood made the long trek from Keswick pay off with a victory in the USRA Hobby Stock main event. The 2007 USRA Hobby Stock National Champion held off tenth-starting Brandon Hare for the honors. Kyle Anderson finished third, Dan Hovden was fourth and Randy Banks rounded out the top-5 at the finish line.

Even bigger fields are expected this Thursday, July 16, as the Cresco Speedway hosts the 6th Annual Great American Stock Car Challenge presented by Kabrick Distributing.

USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will be battling for a $2,000 top prize, while both USRA Modifieds and  USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mods will race for $1,000 to win. The USRA Hobby Stock main event will carry a $700 winner's share of the purse.

All four classes will be racing for track points and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps are slated to begin at 7:00 and the first heat race takes to the track at 7:30.

All classes will be governed by USRA weekly rules. Track points and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series will be awarded for USRA-licensed drivers. Cars meeting IMCA rules in any of the four classes are legal and eligible to compete in this event. No license or track membership is required. In addition to the American Racer KK704, the Hoosier G60 tire will also be allowed in the Modified, Stock Car and B-Mod classes.
