Cummins tops big USRA Modified field at Deer Creek

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Saturday at the Deer Creek Speedway, the final race of the night was the USRA Modified feature event.

Tom Paulson and Todd Scharkey started it out with Scharkey eventually taking control of the second lap.

Nate Wasmund moved into second on lap 3 with Tim Donlinger and Bobby Swanson racing for fourth.

A restart with 20 to go saw Donlinger move into third as Jason Cummins raced Swanson for fourth.

Two laps later, Donlinger made the pass on Wasmund for second.

With 15 laps left in the race, Donlinger was trying to pressure Scharkey but got loose, allowing Cummins by into second.

Jay Ihrke cracked the top-5 with 13 to go as he raced Mike Sorensen for the position.

A restart with 12 to go saw Cummins move under Scharkey for the lead while Ihrke and Sorensen were now racing for fourth behind Scharkey and Donlinger.

Donlinger took second with six to go as Cummins had pulled out to a straight-away lead.

A restart with three to go bunched the field back up and Sorensen went to the pits.

Cummins led the rest of the way to the win followed by Donlinger, Scharkey, Ihrke and Wasmund.

Heat race winners were Scharkey, Swanson, Donlinger and Sorensen.
