Storms halt races at Chateau Raceway

LANSING, Minn. - Things looked good through the mid afternoon hours for the Chateau Raceway to get a complete show in this week. However, the warm and humid conditions were condusive for thunderstorm activity and the area was under a tornado watch as racers and fans filed into the facility.

With race time approaching, the skies were growing darker with thunderstorms rapidly blowing up to the north and west, but the show continued. The kids were able to get rides in their favorite drivers car, as it was the second of three nights that they can do so this season.

Seventy-five race teams were on hand for Power 96/KQAQ 970AM and State Farm Insurance of Albert Lea Night. It was not a question of if it was going to storm, but when and how big of window would be allowed before they arrived.

It turned out that it was just enough time to complete all of the heat race events. Drivers did and incredible job as there were only two yellow flags in the eleven heat races. During the last few heats the lightning was picking up in intensity and it was starting to sprinkle.

With the hornet heats just being completed, word came of tornado warnings just one county the west of the speedway. Rain was then starting to pick up and the rest of the program was postponed.

With all of the preliminary events finished, it is considered a complete show. So next Friday, July 2, race fans will get a Fourth of July weekend bonus. There will be double features in all seven classes, then a complete show to boot. Then for more excitement, stuntman Rocky Hardcore will be in action as well.

Hot laps will get underway at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. For more information on Chateau Raceway, check them out on the web at www.chateauraceway.net.
