Cummins, Hare collect Mascot Night wins at Deer Creek Speedway

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - We really have some great sponsors and fans at the Deer Creek Speedway and they showed up in force Saturday night.

Early in the day, Randy and Patti Eastvold from Hanson Tire called and said they were going to add $100 to each winning driver's check. As the night started, we had Mascot Night at the speedway. Each school that had their mascot on hand was to be given a $50 check. All fans who wore the colors for those schools got in for $5.

Invites were sent out early in the year and we received responses from five schools and four showed up Saturday night: Grand Meadow, Pine Island, Osage (Iowa) and Stewartville. The crowd determined which mascot was their favorite and the winner would get a $250 donation to their school. During the voting, some phone calls and messages were passed on from fans and sponsors on hand for the action. These sponsors decided to add some additional money to make it $500 to win the vote.

But that was not all. As they tried to determine the final winner, more calls were made and the totals were ran up. Also, each mascot sold raffle tickets during the night, raising another $435 for the schools. The raffles were of items donated by the Minnesota Vikings who had their mascot, Viktor, on hand during the afternoon and evening. Viktor participated in many of the activities, working the flagstand, helping with the kids club and opening ceremonies.

By the time the event was done, each mascot was able to collect $620 to bring back to their respective schools. Additional contributions were made by Randy and Patti Eastvold from Hanson Tire, John and Kim Schraeder from Schraeder Trucking and Land Resource Management.

As each driver won their respective feature, it was announced that Hanson Tire raised the winner's check to a $300 bonus instead of the $100 previously announced. Also, Greg Hummel made a $200 hard charger award for the Late Model driver that advanced the most positions during the feature event.

A very special thanks to everyone who contributed to the night's racing action - you continue to show us why we believe we have the greatest fans in the country at the Deer Creek Speedway.

Shaun Walski led lap 1 of the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod division with Mike Jaeger in second. Two- and three-wide racing through the field caused a couple of early restarts, but after the second yellow the field ran hard with Walski still up front and Jaeger and Alex Zwanziger battling for second.

Jaeger held onto the spot with Zwanziger had Brandon Hare to contend with. Hare took the spot, and then with seven laps completed he raced with Jaeger for the second spot. With eight laps completed another caution flew as the leader Walski went up in smoke.
