Cresco Speedway to host Bumper-to-Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series

CRESCO, Ia. (May 16, 2002) - Cresco Speedway, Cresco Iowa, will host the Bumper-to-Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series on Sunday, May 26, 2002. This will be the first of two appearances in 2002 at the speedway, with the other race date on Sunday, September 1.

"We expect 35 to 40 of the top sprint car drivers in the Midwest to be in competition," stated Tom Barnes, speedway manager. "The speedway has hosted the IRA Sprints on Labor Day weekend for the past 6 years, and this show has grown to a be a very exciting race that our fans really look forward to. Steve Sinclair, IRA President, asked if we could host another race date this year. Due to our great support from area race fans and our weekly competitors, we felt a second date would work well."

Among the sprint car drivers expected include Joe Roe, a three-time winner of the fall race at the speedway, Kim Mock, John Haeni, Donny Goeden and Scott Neitzel to name a few. Also expected are several Knoxville Speedway regulars, which will bring a great mix of talent and interest to the event.

The current track record, 13.892 seconds, was set last September by Blake Freese, which is almost 2 seconds quicker than the 2000 time set. The quicker time is due in most part to a complete rebuilding of the speedway, which included much higher banking and new clay.

Also in competition will be Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Stock Cars. This will be a regular weekly point night for these classes and speedway rules will apply.

Pits will open at 3:30 p.m. and the grandstand will open at 4:30 p.m. Racing action will get underway at 5:30 p.m. with hot laps and qualifying for the sprint cars, followed by hot laps and heats for the Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Stock Car classes. Admission is $15 for adults, $3 for 6yrs to 12 yrs and free under 6yrs. 2002 Cresco Speedway season passes are valid for this event. Pit passes are $15. Camping is available on the fairgrounds.

Bronner Machine of Lime Springs and Dan's Standard of Decorah are sponsors of this event.
