Duffy wins NEI Mod Tour stop at Cresco Speedway

CRESCO, Iowa (June 26, 2002) - The Cresco Speedway held the first ever (Northeast Iowa) NEI Mod Tour race on Wednesday, June 26, 2002. Darin Duffy came from eleventh for the win on a great night of racing.

As the green flag fell, Jamie Aikey quickly took to the lead and fended off a challenge from Larry Schmidt for the first five laps. Schmidt tucked in behind him, but was unable up to keep up with the fast pace Aikey set.

Duffy started eleventh for the 20-lap A Main. By lap five, Duffy had worked his way into a four-car battle for second. Larry Schmidt and Chuck Stanton ran side-by-side trying to take the second position on lap five. Duffy had worked his way around Kerry Ludebuhr for fourth. By lap nine, Darin Duffy had made his way around Schmidt and Stanton and set his sights on the leader Aikey.

"The car really came to us," Duffy said in victory lane. "I tried to get around Aikey for the lead several times."

Aikey hugged the low side keeping Duffy at bay. On lap fourteen, Duffy went to a higher groove in turn three and was able to motor around Aikey to take the lead.

"Going into (turn) three I worked up a little higher," Duffy commented, "and I found a little moisture there, and finally I just got by him. It was a fun race."

Aikey would hold on for second.

While the battle for the lead was taking place, Schmidt and Stanton swapped third place a handful of times. Stanton would win the battle to the line for third. Schmidt finished fourth, and Chad Lerch who started twentieth finished fifth.

Action Sign Heat Race wins went to Jon Passick, Dan Bohr, Chuck Stanton, and Darin Duffy. Action Sign & Banner of Waterloo, IA paid a fifty dollar bonus to Darin Duffy for winning his heat and the A Main at Cresco.

Next up for the NEI Mod Tour will be the Independence Motor Speedway on Wednesday, July 10th to kickoff the Buchanan County Fair.
