Cresco Speedway race results

CRESCO, Ia. (July 7, 2002) - Computer Professionals Unlimited of Cresco, Iowa sponsored tonight's Mid Season Championship races at the Cresco Speedway. Things were run a little differently this year than in the past, in that the heat races did matter for these championships. Following a top four finish in the heat, the top twelve drivers drew for a starting position in the feature instead of starting in the same position you were sitting in for the point standings. This made the heat races a lot more exciting as well as the feature races.

Starting the night's heat races were the Modifieds with heat wins going to Chuck Stanton, Brian Schrage, and Darin Duffy. The Hobby Stock heat wins went to Jeremy Moellers, Darin Walch, and Kevin Donlan.

Lynn Panos and Marinus Mlady picked up the heat wins in the Stock Car class and the Hornet heat win went to Jason Lindvig.

The Cash Dash was held once again tonight featuring the top two finishers from the heat races. Chuck Stanton picked up the win in the Modifieds, Darin Walch in the Hobby Stock, and Lynn Panos in the Stock Car. Walch then went ahead and accepted the Gordy's A Challenge, which put him at the end of the pack of the feature race.

All Steve Dweyer was looking to do in the Hornet feature was to finish a race. Tonight was his fourth time to the track and the last three times he has been unable to finish the feature. Tonight was his night though, as he started third and moved up to the top spot on lap one. Dweyer never gave up that spot, pulling away from the pack and picking up the checkered flag 1/4 of a lap in front of the second place car. Gary Gulrud finished second, followed by Scott Spilde and Jason Lindvig.

The Factory Stock feature was next to take the track. Jimmy Broszirt was sitting second in points and looking to pick up the win tonight. He would have to do that in a substitute car though, as he wrecked his own car the other night. The substite car did not slow him down at all and Broszirt picked up the Mid Season Championship trophy. Robert Malli, Jeremy Oakes, and Dave Lickteig rounded out the top four.

Darin Duffy was leading the Modified points division heading into tonight's race. Unfortunately, on the opening lap, he ran into a tire, breaking the steering in the front of the car, sending him to the infield. It was then a race for the top and Chuck Stanton was looking to pick up his second feature win of the year. He took over the lead, but a strong Schaufenbuel was coming after him. Schaufenbuel started 13th, and made it up to second, but Stanton was just to much for him to catch. Stanton crossed the finish line first, followed by Schaufenbuel, Tim Heins, and Josh Secor.

Darin Walch took Gordy's A Challenge for the second time this year, putting him at the end of the pack and looking for the lead. Kevin Donlan, Jeremy Moellers, Tory Reicks, and Dan Christopher were battling for the lead from lap one and continued battling until the checkered flag was thrown. No one was able to catch those four, as Donlan picked up his second feature win in a row, followed by Christopher, Reicks, and Moellers. Walch ended up in sixth.

Lynn Panos is currently sitting third in the Stock Car point standings and was able to pick up the pole position for tonight's feature race. Panos battled early on with Marinus Mlady and then Jeff Schluetter, but then pulled away and lead all laps to pick up the win. Schluetter finished second, followed by Mlady and Scott Bauer.
