Payne collects bonus money at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, Mo -- Jeremy Payne of Springfield claimed $750 top prize in the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds presented by Hermitage Lumber on Saturday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway. An excellant field of the region's top Modified drivers were on hand for the Father's Day special.

As rained moved into the area on Saturday night, the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds lined up for a 25-lap main event. Defending USRA National Champion Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., started from the pole and remained out front for the opening laps of the feature. After a couple cautions, Payne worked his way forward to challenge for the lead.

Bone and Payne went back and forth, giving fans an exciting and intense battle for the lead. Eventually Payne passed Bone but a pair of late-race cautions allowed the two to stack back up. Bone made a pass on Payne late, but was unable to keep the spot.

Payne and Bone were followed by Jason Hughes of West Plains to the finish. Terry Schultz of Sedalia was fourth and Logan Martin of West Plains was fifth.

Wheatland's Jason Pursley was the feature's hard charger, finishing seventh after starting 20th.
