Jackson, Austin on top in Iron Man Challenge thrillers at I-35 Speedway

WINSTON, Mo. -- Steve Jackson and Chase Austin provided the fireworks Thursday night as they notched a pair of thrilling Iron Man Challenge feature wins at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo.

In the 20-lap USRA Stock Car main event, Jackson put together a patented performance that ended with the Polk City, Iowa, veteran taking the lead in the final seconds.

Winston’s Jake Cameron stole the lead from polesitter Derrick Agee on the second lap and paced the rest of the race up until the end. Jackson, meanwhile, started ninth and was up to fifth by lap 5 and second with 11 laps in the books.

Agee, along with Iron Man Challenge points leader Mitch Hovden and defending series champ Tom Schmitt, made for tight racing up front that continued throughout the race. In fact, Jackson slid back as far as sixth with just six laps to go.

But when you’re one of the winningest and most decorated Stock Car drivers of all time, you learn how to find a way to the front … and that’s exactly what Jackson did.

With five laps to go Jackson was fifth. He passed two cars two laps later to move into third place with three orbits remaining.

Then, on the final lap, Jackson let it all hang out on the high side of the 3/8-mile clay oval and powered around the outside of Hovden and Cameron. He pulled even with Cameron as they exited turn 4 and won the drag-race to the finish line with less than a bumper to spare.

The win was Jackson’s first of the 2013 campaign and worth $750.

Cameron settled for a $500 runner-up paycheck with Hovden, Schmitt and Agee following closely in third, fourth and fifth.

With his seventh top-5 finish in eight starts, Hovden continues to hold a healthy advantage over Schmitt in the points standings. Kyle Falck sits third, Jackson moved up to fourth and Lynn Panos is fifth.

The next Iron Man Challenge race for the USRA Stock Cars takes place on Saturday, Aug. 31, when they join the USMTS Modifieds at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

Thursday night’s USRA B-Mod 20-lapper saw Chase Austin of Eudora, Kan., makes his first start of the season a fruitful one as he led from start to finish to collect his first Iron Man Challenge trophy and the $500 top prize.

USRA B-Mod national points leader Troy Hovey of Castalia, Iowa, made a late-race charge from his ninth-place starting spot to challenge for the win, but a final-lap bobble allowed Shadren Turner to slip in for the runner-up finish behind Austin.

Chad Feather came from 19 to finish fourth and tenth-starting Chad Clancy came home fifth.

Corey Crapser, who did not make the trip from Wisconsin for this event, continues to lead the Iron man Challenge points battle for the USRA B-Mods. Dan Wheeler is second, followed by Jared Timmerman, Hovey and Jacob Bleess.

The next Iron Man Challenge race for the USRA B-Mods takes place on Thursday, Aug. 22, when they join the USMTS Modifieds at the Valley Speedway, Grain Valley, Mo.
