Phillips rules opening night of USRA Fall Nationals

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Terry Phillips overtook Ricky Thornton Jr. around the mid-point in Thursday's 30-lap feature to win the opening qualifying night of the USRA Fall Nationals at the Southern New Mexico Speedway.

Dereck Ramirez led the first few laps before Thornton motored around him and looked like a lock to win.

However, Phillips, who started seventh, came to life and lapped traffic slowed Thornton's pace.

Phillips worked through lapped traffic and took over the point.

The race's lone caution waved with 10 laps to go. Phillips restarted at the head of the double-file restart and pulled away for a convincing win.

Thorton ended second, Rodney Sanders came out of the "B" Main to run third, Jacob Gallardo was fourth and Fito Gallardo finished fifth.

The top 5 finishers are all locked into Saturday's $10,000-to-win feature. They will make up the inside of the first five rows, with Phillips on the pole.

Friday will see the same format, but will set the outside five rows.

Live coverage continues on RacinDirt.tv for those unable to attend. Friday's program can be seen for just $14.95, and Saturday's finale can be viewed with a $19.95 package.
