Mattick scores graduation and victory in one week

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (June 15, 2002) - Tonight's racing activities were sponsored by John Hardy's BBQ of Rochester. The weather was clear and warm and the track had ample moisture in it for the racing activities tonight. After a little blade work during the intermission on the lower side of the track to remove a little excess moisture the track was very fast. Double wide racing was the norm tonight as both grooves were exceptionally fast.

The street stocks hit the track first with Jim Gustafson showing his dominance early in the race with John Bushman, Shawn Whelage and Greg Erickson in a great battle for second. These three drivers swapped spots all running three different lines on the track and crossing the line three wide for the third lap. Whelage gained the upper hand moving into second and leaving Bushman and Erickson to battle for the third spot. Up front Gustafson continued to pull away as a caution flew for an incident with Troy Bentz and David Krucklberg in turn four. On the restart Travis Krause moved into a battle with Erickson for the fourth spot. These two ran side by side for two laps until Krause slipped back to sixth with a bobble in turn two. Upfront Gustafson continued on with his performance taking home the win, Whelage second and Bushman third. The win was Gustafson's third win in a row.

WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on the track next with Jerry Young taking the early lead. Scott Pomeroy was running second in a side by side battle with Jessie Frericks. These tow drivers got together coming out of four with Neil Eckhart getting caught up in the accident going into the pits to change a flat. Frericks was send to the back for the incident. Kenny Wytaske debuted a new car this weekend running the former Brad Waits owned Pierce Chassis car. The new color scheme looked good and Wytaske was running well and into the fourth spot as the caution flew after starting twelfth on the grid. On the restart Wytaske moved into the second spot with many two wide battled back through the field. With five to go Chad Herman moved into the top five after starting twentieth on the field. At the stripe it was Young with the win, Wytaske second and George Schrumpf in third. At the scales Young was too light handing the win to Wytaske with Schrumpf second and Herman third.

The super stocks were flying around the high side early on in the race with Teske leading the field. Behind him Kevin Hager and Dave Haberman were in a strong battle for the second spot with Bill Clemens and George Batzel battling for the fourth spot. Clemens finally gained the spot moving into the fourth position while Hager and Haberman continue to battle for the second spot. At the midpoint of the race the low side of the track became a little quicker line for the leaders and Clemens slowly worked his way up past Hager and Haberman into the second spot. Nick Herrick was slowly making his way up through the field and cracked the top five at the midway point of the feature. Teske came home with the win followed closely by Clemens in second and Haberman in third.

The Open Modified feature was a fast paced affair with Nathan Kilwine and Bob Timm taking the field to the line. Timm jumped into the early lead with Kilwine and Steve Wetzstein running side by side for the second spot. These tow continued their battle side by side until the first caution flew. Todd Scharkey also was working his way back through the field and on the restart moved into a battle with Kilwine and Wetzstein for the second spot. Three wide for a lap until Kilwine dropped back slightly with Scharkey taking over the second spot. At this point Timm had built up a good lead which was eliminated by a caution. On the restart Scharkey gained the top spot with Wetzstein, Kilwine and Bobby Sorenson battling for the third spot. These three put on the best show of the night running three wide for three laps until Wetzstein got the top groove moving again and renewed his battle with Timm for the second spot. At the finish it was Scharkey with his second win in a row, Wetzstein second and Timm third.

The Late Models used mostly the bottom groove tonight for their feature race with Ben Mattick taking the pole position to his advantage. Last weekend Mattick graduated from high school and on Sunday night in Kasson flipped his Late Model. The crew had to work hard on putting it back together this past week, but with good success as Mattick was strong out front. It was a heated battle for third on back tonight as Jon Chrest and Eric Breeschoten battled hard for the third spot with Nick Herrick trying to get into the third spot running the tires on the corner of the track. Keith Foss slowly started to make his way towards the front riding the tires on the inside of the track. Herrick and Chrest got together in four causing some damage to the rear of the Chrest car as the rear end of the car really hiked into the air with some suspension damage. Chrest was able to continue on with a little more rear end travel than usual. Foss, Teske and Herrick were battling hard for the third spot when Foss and Herrick got together sending Foss to the rear. Two laps later Teske who was running a slightly higher line than anyone else got tangled up with Breeschoten sending them both spinning down the front straight, ending Breeschoten's race. At the finish it was Mattick with his first ever Late Model feature win, Waits second and Bob Timm third. Timm slowly had worked his way towards the front just staying out of the way.

In the modified lite feature Jeff Jech gained the upper hand early with the lead from his front row starting spot. There were many three four and even five wide racing from the dwarf cars for the first four laps as some of the strong runners had started towards the rear of the field. Jech was dominate tonight and pulled out his second feature win of the season with Chris Lewison second and Brian Shaw coming home in third.
