Smith snags Superbowl Speedway opener

Eventual USRA Modified feature winner Cody Smith (18) races inside of Billy Brierton at the Superbowl Speedway on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

GREENVILLE, Texas -- Cody Smith of Kaufman, Texas, grabbed the lead from Billy Brierton on lap 13 and led the final seven laps to win the USRA Modified main event on opening night at the Superbowl Speedway on Saturday, March 1.

Josh Landers led at the drop of the green flag until Brierton took away the top spot with three laps in the books. Landers briefly regained control on lap 11 but Smith roared past two laps later to take the lead for good.

Brierton and Landers were second and third at the finish line. Billy Melton and Matt Deaver rounded out the top five.

Racing continues next Saturday, March 8. Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing starts at 4 p.m. Check out for more information.
