Brauer bests Dodge County Fair field

by Chris Stepan

KASSON, Minn. (July 15, 2001) - The Dodge County Fair welcomed fans and racers alike to the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, MN on Sunday for a special fair racing event. Increased purses in all four divisions were on the line, which brought over 100 cars in to do battle for the evening.

The Street Stocks were up first for their main event and saw Jeff Brauer get the jump on Steve Goodenough at the drop of the green flag, which he was able to hold for several laps until Dan Gullikson began to make the high line work and blew by both Goodenough and Brauer into the lead on lap 5. As soon as Gullikson took command up front, Brauer and Goodenough picked up the pace a bit as well, with Brauer battling right back and overtaking Gullikson for the lead with only 2 laps remaining of the time-limit shortened event. Brauer set off into the lead as the white flag flew and never looked back as he went on to pick up his second win of the weekend ahead of Gullikson and Goodenough.

Corey Miller got the jump on Jim Arnold at the start of the Midwest Modified feature and began to pull out to an advantage early on, while Carter Gerlach was on the move, flying around the high side of the speedway and appeared in third before the mid point of the event. Greg Pfiefer was also sitting in the top five and was beginning to make his presence felt as the laps wound down.

Gerlach continued his tear and pulled up alongside of Arnold for second on lap 9 and began to track down Miller up front as well. Gerlach brought Arnold with him after Miller and it soon became a three-car battle for the lead. Miller continued to show the way, but Gerlach and Arnold were stalking him with each passing lap. As the white flag flew, Arnold was able to sneak back under Gerlach for second, but Miller was strong and picked up another feature win in his # 94.

The Super Stock feature was a good one as well with Mark Wytaske getting the jump on Mark Teske and sailing off into the lead. Don Eischens then quickly moved in to battle with Teske for second, securing the spot on lap 2. Eischens then set off after Wytaske for the lead as Bill Clemens was on the fly and was battling with Nick Herrick for fourth, just behind the leaders.

Eischens and Wytaske were locked in a great battle for the lead and were about to put Chris Quast a lap down when Eischens pulled alongside of Wytaske for the lead as they raced out of turn 4 and made contact with Quast, sending him sideways in front of the field. Herrick had no where to go and piled into Quast as did Bill Clemens, causing Quast's fuel cell to split wide open, spilling gallons of fuel out onto the front stretch. The severe damage to all three machines and the time that it would take to clean up the mess caused track officials to cancel the remaining 10 laps on the feature, awarding the win to Wytaske with Eischens and Teske the remainder of the top three.

Pete Grundvold jumped into the lead at the start of the $1,000 to win Modified main event, but was stalked by Nate Wasmund throughout the early part of the show until Wasmund was able to blast into the lead on a restart and take command. Jay Ihrke came along with Wasmund into second while Todd Scharkey, Mike Sorensen and Nathan Kilwine were locked in a great battle for third.

Ihrke reeled Wasmund as did Scharkey and the fun began as the top three drivers were putting on slide job after slide job on each other, making contact on several occasions, shuffling up the running order a bit, seeing Scharkey take the lead on lap 12.

After a restart, Sorensen shot to the inside of Ihrke into second and returned the favor by sliding under Scharkey into the lead, only to see Todd come right back and steal the lead back from Sorensen. Once, Scharkey retook the lead, he rode the cushion to the win ahead of Ihrke, who shot back by Sorensen into second on the last lap.

After the races were over, a heated discussion and altercation occurred in victory lane between several of the top drivers and Scharkey's # 45 was found to have an illegal part and was disqualified, handing the $1,000 paycheck over to Ihrke.

Racing resumes at Dodge County this Sunday with regular racing action for WISSOTA Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds. The first green flag is set to fly at 7pm.
