WARRENSBURG, Mo.—The hot weather returned to the west-central Missouri area on Saturday matching the racing action on Pepsi Night at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). Race fans were pleased to see some of their favorite drivers repeat in victory lane this weekend, including Terry Schultz of Sedalia who returned to victory lane for a third time this year in USRA Modified action.

USRA Modifieds were fresh off their Tom Wilson Memorial Bowl Fourth of July events from last week with a 25-car field. Preliminary heat race winners included Terry Schultz on top in heat one with Brian Johnson and Justin Johnson in tow. Gunner Martin won in convincing fashion in a close finish in heat two ahead of Tim Karrick and Nick Pence. The third heat of the night went to Jim Moody in front of Lewis Jackson and Danny Scrogham. The final heat of the night had Mark Schafman ahead of Mickey Burrell and Mike Eisenhut.

USRA Modified drivers entered the track competing for the $1,000-to-win weekly racing event with their 25-lap main event. Just like last week, pole position went to Gunner Martin based on heat race passing points and he led the field for several restarts early. The cautions caused several top cars to exit the track including Jim Moody, Brian Johnson, Aaron Marrant and Nick Pence who slowly turned over in turn four; he was uninjured in the mishap.

The feature race drivers finally settled in to a rhythm and clicked off laps at a blistering pace with Schultz asserting himself up front along with Edwardsville, Kansas driver Mark Schafman. Schafman actually grabbed the lead early on until Schultz took control of the race. Schultz commanded the race for the remaining laps as Karrick and Schafman battled for the second and third spots.

As flagman Hershel Thompson’s final double checkers of the night flew over the field, Schultz claimed his third CMS modified victory of the year. Karrick made a late-race move into second ahead of Schafman who hung on for third, Martin finished a solid fourth, Matt Johnson in his new GRT modified was fifth while Scrogham rounded out the top six.

Next weekend includes weekly racing on 610 Sports Radio Race Night at Central Missouri Speedway. USRA Modifieds, USRA B-Mods, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks will all be on hand for the race program competing for championship points for the 2015 track championships.
