KANSAS CITY, Kan.—The staff at the Lakeside Speedway hit a home run with the racing surface on night 2 of the season and it showed as the racing was spectacular on Friday.

It was a week ago that Chad Clancy took the opening night win. Fans might have been wondering if the Clancy from 2014 might be back to make another bid for a track championship and a national championship in the USRA B-Mod division.

Patrick Royalty and Gene Claxton led the field to the green flag in the feature, and Claxton led the opening lap. Clancy, who started sixth on the grid, needed only two laps to get to the front of the field as he blasted by Claxton on the high side to take the top spot.

Brad Smith, who started third, kept pace with Clancy and stayed close throughout the early part of the main event. A nice battled raged for the third and fourth spots on the track between Mike Tanner and Tim Powell. Tanner finally gained the advantage just past halfway.

Clancy, meanwhile, was out in front of the competition and putting a stranglehold on the top spot. Smith ate away at the lead, and even reached Clancy’s back bumper as the laps clicked off. That pressure was enough to worry Clancy as he put it in another gear on the last few laps and sped away to his second consecutive win of the season at the Lakeside Speedway.

Smith held down the runner-up spot, third went to hard-charging seventh-starting Tanner, Powell drove to his best finish of the early season in fourth and rounding out the top five driving from 11th to fifth was Luke Nieman.

Heat race winners were Steven Clancy, Shadren Turner, Powell and Tanner. The "B" feature was won by Heath Murry.

Trevor Hunt, like Clancy, was seeking a repeat win in the USRA Stock Car main event. Hunt started on the pole once again and took to the lead, but on lap three saw his lead go away as Lucas Conley and Kevin Anderson applied the pressure on Hunt.

Conley took the lead and that left Hunt in a battle with Anderson. The front of this feature started to get real good as four drivers were in the mix for the win. A yellow bunched them up just around the midway point. As the green flag restarted the race all four cars made their bid for supremacy.

Conley, Anderson and Brett Heeter were hooked up on the top side while Hunt stuck to his guns and the bottom. Lap nine saw Conley take to the low line to keep Hunt at bay. When he made the move it could have been the wrong one as Anderson blew by on the high side and went to the top spot.

Once there, it looked just like 99 percent of the features from 2015: Anderson and Heeter were at the front and running away with the race. In the end it was Anderson logging his first win of 2016. Heeter drove to the second-place finish, thgird went to Hunt, Conley held on for fourth and Blake Peeler took the fifth-place finish.

Heat race winners were Heeter and Jake Newman.

Shad Badder and Darron Fuqua brought the field to the green in the main event for the USRA Modified division.

An early caution slowed the action right off the bat. Fuqua, the current national points leader in the USRA Modified ranks, took to the front spot and held on to it. Lap after lap he had to hold off Todd Shute, who was at Lakeside to prepare for next week’s USMTS event.

The battle between Fuqua and Shute was a good one. The drivers swapped spots as Fuqua reclaimed the lead. Lapped traffic provided more excitement for the two as they raced around the track.

Just prior to the halfway point, Fuqua had been doing a great job of retaking the lead any time Shute made a run to the front. Out of turn two as Fuqua lost some momentum as he was looking to get around a lapped car. That was all the break that Shute needed to take over the top spot.

Shute flexed his muscle from that point on in the feature as he went on to an easy win. Fuqua finished second for the second straight week while last week’s winner, Kerry Davis, drove from 10th to finish third. Aaron Marrant was the hard charger of the night going from 14th to fourth and Badder held on to come home in fifth.

Heat race winners were Shute, Tyler Schmidt and Lance Town.

Next week the USMTS heads into Lakeside Speedway for the Tompkins Industries USMTS Rumble on the River's Edge. Pits open at 4:30,. spectator gates open at 5, hot laps start at 7 and racing begins at 7:30.

General admission seating is $20 for adults, $15 for kids ages 7-12. Admission to the terrace is $25 for adults and $8 for kids ages 7-12. Suites are $25 per adult and $10 for kids ages 12 and under. Children ages 6 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35 for all ages.

One week from today, the United States Modified Touring Series returns to action for a three-day swing to kick off more than twenty nights of racing between now and Memorial Day.

After 20 days off since the checkered flag dropped and Zack VanderBeek was crowned the sixth King of America, the stars of the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental are getting set for six straight weekends of intense racing.

The party gets started at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., on Friday, April 22, to kick off a three-race weekend that will also see the bad boys with fast toys invade the Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., on Saturday, April 23, and then a first-ever trip to the Atchison County Raceway in Atchison, Kan., on Sunday, April 24, for a high-horsepower “cage match.”

All three events will award $3,000 to the main event winner and valuable points in the MSD Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports.

With just one race complete in the region, Jason Hughes holds a slim points lead over Ryan Gustin and newly-crowned King VanderBeek, with Hunter Marriott and Daniel Hilsabeck rounding out the top five.

The 5th Annual Tompkins Industries Rumble on the River’s Edge at the Lakeside Speedway will put the spotlight not only on the USMTS Modifieds but the Iron Man Challenge featuring Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will also be in action, along with Grand Nationals and Factory Stocks.
