CRESCO, Iowa -- The USRA Stock Car Shootout rolled into the Cresco Speedway on Sunday for the fifth race in the seven-race mini-series through the State of Iowa and Southern Missouri. In all, 94 cars and drivers in five classes signed in for a Sunday night brawl.

A field of 30 USRA Stock Cars checked in featuring some of the best Stock Car drivers in the region. With a $1,000 top prize up for grabs, defending track champion Tom Schmitt of Independence showed the tough field the fast way around the Cresco clay and picked up the victory. Schmitt held off a late-race charge by Lynn Panos of Protivin, who raced from 12th on the starting grid to take home the runner-up paycheck. Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., finished third, followed by Riceville's Scott Bauer and Brian Gjere of Mabel, Minn.

In Sunday's USRA Modified main event, Postville's Darrin Walch garnered his second win of the 2006 season as he held off Brad Bakken of Garner for the victory. Points leader Kevin Pittman of Waterloo finished third, while Michael Darnall of West Union and John Doelle Jr. of Arcadia, Wis., finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

USRA Hobby Stocks saw Brandon Hare of Elma return to the winners circle, with Knoxville's Bill Gibson churning out a second-place finish in his first visit to Cresco this season. Third went to Chris Hovden of Cresco, fourth was Ottumwa's Mike Shelton and Mitch Hovden of Decorah rounded out the top five finishers.

Patty Fosaaen of Waukon captured the Outlaw Hobby feature race, with Kevin Campbell of Hawkeye taking the runner-up spot. Waukon pilots Matt Jones and Austin Curtin took third and fourth, while Ben Moudry of Protivin was fifth.

The ever-growing USRA B-Modified class provided the hearty Cresco Speedway grandstands with a thriller of a main event. In the end, it was Brian Kunkle of Oelwein pulling out the win after a heated battle with Fayette's Jason Rohde. Behind Rohde, Junior Boyer of Calmar was a close third and Brian Schrage was in the mix in front of his hometown crowd and finished fourth. Chris Fretheim of Decorah nabbed fifth.

The USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series action continues next Sunday, July 9, with five fast & furious classes in action, including USRA Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks, plus Outlaw Hobbies. Admission is $9 for adults, juniors (12-18) & seniors (62+) are $7 and children under 12 get in for FREE. Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 6:30.

The Cresco Speedway is located 0.2 miles north of SR 9 on SW 7th (at the Howard County Fairgrounds). For more information call the track hotline at (563) 547-3400.
