Shryock makes Deer Creek visit payoff, tops 39-car field

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- The track crew has been busy this past week at Deer Creek Speedway applying some new clay racing surface onto the speedway. Approximately 100 yards of material was added on Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week. With an all day rain on Thursday the track was worked in and provided some good racing action on Saturday night, despite cloudy skies all day on Friday and only partly clearing on Saturday afternoon. Other than a couple rough spots the track was in good racing condition and with some extra traveling drivers the fans were treated to some great racing action.

With the O'Reilly USMTS series being cancelled at a nearby track, many of the traveling stars of the series showed up to battle with the local USRA Modifieds as they get ready for the upcoming Labor Day Dual. A total of 39 entries checked into the back gate for racing action on the night.

The modifieds had a tough time tonight with a complete restart after a spin in turn one. On the restart outside front row sitter Mark Noble lost the handle of his machine in turn two causing a major pileup and ending the night for some strong runners.

When the green finally waved and a lap was completed Tommy Myer led the field with Steve Arpin and Kelly Shryock moving up to battle for the lead on lap two. Behind them Jay Ihrke, Tim Donlinger and Neil Eckhart were three wide for fourth. The lead pack stayed three wide for the next three laps until Arpin dropped back slightly with Donlinger taking over the fourth spot. Myer and Shryock continued the battle for the lead with Shryock gaining control as another caution flew.

On the restart Shryock led with Myer, Arpin and fifteenth starting Jason Krohn racing for second. Myer kept contol of the spot until another restart with seventeen to go. On the restart Myer and Krohn touched with Myer ending up with a flat and ending his night. Krohn followed Shryock around on the restart with Arpin and Jay Ihrke side by side for third while Todd Scharkey and Mike Sorensen raced for fifth.

Another caution with thirteen to go caught the eye as Brian Shaw who started twenty second on the field had quickly worked to the front and was in the top five. With nine to go Shaw worked on Scharkey for fourth. Ryan Ruter also moved past Scharkey to take over fifth.

With three to go Shaw moved past Arpin into third while Krohn continued to follow Shryock around the speedway to take home second. Shryock held on for the win.

Next racing action will be Saturday night with all 5 classes of cars in action.

Tickets are on sale for all action at the speedway with the Labor Day Dual coming up on the 2nd of September with the World Dirt Racing League and the United States Modified Touring Series in action at the speedway. Also tickets are available for the Valley Featherlite PRCA Rodeo on the 9th and 10th of September as well as tickets for the eighth annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree on the 20th through the 23rd of September.
