CRESCO, Iowa -- The USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series continued at the Cresco Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 20, featuring USRA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbies. With the Modified season championship just one week away, and titles to be decided in all other classes on Sept. 3, the action was fast and furious from the first green flag until the final checkered flag waved.

In a thrilling battle between track champion hopefuls, Chris Hovden of Cresco fought of the challenges of Elma's Brandon Hare to take the victory in the USRA Hobby Stock division. The win padded Hovden's points lead over Hare from five to ten markers with just two races remaining in the season. Bill Meyer of Sumner finished third, with Kyle Buxengard of Spring Grove, Minn., and Paul Howard of Waukon rounding out the top five finishers.

In Outlaw Hobby action, Kurt Krauskopf of Decorah picked up his first win of the season as he beat Protivin's Ben Moudry to the finish line. Points leader Patty Fosaaen of Waukon, Tom Fink of Waukon and Neil Thesing of Oakdale completed the first five across the stripe.

Brian Kunkle of Oelwein extended his points lead in the USRA B-Modified class as he scored his sixth main event win of the 2006 season. Raymond Lundry of Maynard finished second ahead of Postville's Jimmy Broszeit, while polesitter Chris Fretheim of Decorah took fourth. Jeremy LaPlant of Elgin, who is currently second in points and trying to run down Kunkle for the title, finished fifth.

Picking up his seventh checkered flag of the year, Tom Schmitt of Independence moved closer to defending his USRA Stock Car track championship crown as he raced to the win from ninth on the starting grid. Eighth-starting Tory Reicks of Waucoma grabbed the runner-up spot, with 10th-starting Brian Gjere of Mabel, Minn., in third. Lynn Panos of Protivin was fourth and Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., was fifth.

In the USRA Modified main event, Dan Bohr of Decorah garnered his seventh top-five finish of the season, but first main event win as he outgunned Garner's Brad Bakken for the top spot. Todd Ihde of Decorah took home a third-place paycheck, while Darrin Walch of Postville and Keith Pittman of Waterloo rounded out the top five finishers. Points leader Kevin Pittman of Waterloo struggled to a seventh-place finish, but still managed to clinch the 2006 USRA Modified track points title heading into next week's finale for the division.

The action returns to the Cresco speedway next Sunday, Aug. 27, CPU/i wireless presents the final points race of the 2006 season for the mud-slinging USRA Modifieds, plus action in all other USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series classes, including USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks, plus Outlaw Hobbies. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 6:30.

One week later, the final event of the 2006 season is on tap with the Bumper To Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series as the fire-breathing 410 winged warriors make their annual trek to Cresco for the Kabrick Distributing Labor Day Classic. Also on the menu will be Season Championship races for four classes in the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series: USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbies.
