Mother Nature washed up the Southern New Mexico Speedway an hour before the races, calling for a 9:14.p.m start time Friday night. Fans stayed with us until two in the morning as we didn't quit. Heat races started off slow, but drivers and fans knew it was going to be a fast one for the features. It was night one of the Summer Sizzle featuring USRA Modifieds and Holley USRA Stock Cars.

USRA Modified action was super fast with tonight's conditions as 26 drivers checked in calling for a great 25-lap feature. Dr. Tom Georges had a great start and led early with Dustin Smith trying to win on his wife's birthday and challenging Georges for the lead. Bumper Jones ran third, followed by Fito Gallardo and Jesse Hayne. Gallardo battled Jones for third and would get it on lap four, and then found momentum to power his way by Smith for runner-up before snatching the lead from Georges on lap five.

Jones chased down Georges for second, then ate into Gallardo's lead. Five laps later, Jones was faster on the bottom and had Gallardo out of turn four. Jones was about to get the lead until Sherman Barnett, who was going a lap down, went low and made contact with Jones.

On the lap-11 restart, Gallardo took off with Smith running second and Jacob Gallardo up to third. Jacob Gallardo got by Smith and then followed his dad for five laps until two cautions flew in a row. With eight laps to go, Zane DeVilbiss was now third and things heated up quickly as Fito Gallardo and Jacob Gallardo battled for the lead. With five to go the Gallardos went side by side and Jacob got the lead with four to go but Fito got back around.

It was a stellar finish as Fito Gallardo won the main event over Jacob Gallardo. Jones worked his way back to seventh.

Fito Gallardo (G17) held off his son, Jacob Gallardo (G3), to win the USRA Modified feature.

A field of 39 Holley USRA Stock Cars checked in for the opening night of the Stock Car Showdown as we had a 24-car feature set for night one.

Jaime Torres led the first three laps easily with two cautions flying until Jacob Gallardo challenged for the lead. Gallardo was fast behind the wheel of Pete Vargas's No. 777 for the weekend.

On lap six, Gallardo took the lead from Torres. Four cautions flew while Gallardo had the lead, but it didn't stop him from putting on a clinic to win night one of the Summer Sizzle.
