Wetzstein sweeps Deer Creek Modified action

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - After coming off a successful Fourth of July race and then Wednesday night's Gopher 50, a good field of cars and fans showed up for the regular night of racing on Saturday night at the Deer Creek Speedway.

Layne Meyer jumped out to the early lead of the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified feature with a four-wide battle behind him. Tom Paulson and Bobby Swanson soon were wide by side for second with Steve Wetzstein and Brad Waits directly behind them.

With two laps down, Swanson settled into second as Paulson now raced with Wetzstein for third. Paulson continued to hold on to the edge as Meyer was slowly pulling away from the field up front.

With 14 to go, Swanson, Paulson, Waits and Wetzstein were now in a four-car race for the second spot. Paulson held onto second with Waits moving up to third.

A caution with 12 to go saw Meyer leading with Wetzstein diving in low and working into second. Next lap, Waits moved past Paulson and took over third as Wetzstein and Meyer were now locked into a great battle. Wetzstein worked under Meyer only to have Meyer shoot by on the outside and into the lead. For the next laps they did the same thing until Meyer was not able to get enough drive off the corner to pull back alongside of Wetzstein who now controlled the field.

Jason Cummins showed inside the top-5 and worked on Paulson for the fourth spot. Waits and Meyers raced side by side for three laps for the second spot until a caution waved setting up the final dash.

At the finish it was Wetzstein with the win, Waits and Cummins rounded out the top three followed by Meyer and Paulson.

Heat races were won by Swanson, Nate Wasmund and Wetzstein, who took the $100 Chimney Sweep Bonus.
