Sorensen, Groenendyk win, beat weather at Deer Creek

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Deer Creek Speedway had a beautiful day going with a pit full of cars. Heat races were ran off in a timely manner and over two and a half of the features were ran then the rains came down. After a quick shower the crew went back to work and in just over an hour the track was ready to finish out the final three features of the night.

A big jumble in the middle of the pack looked to bring out the caution on the initial start but everyone somehow kept moving and the race was on in the USRA RHS Modifieds. Nate Wasmund wrestled the lead away from Mike Sorensen on lap two but then relinquished the spot on the next lap. Lucas Schott and Todd Scharkey were side by side for second while Josh Angst and Jason Cummins battled for fourth. Five down saw Scharkey in second while Schott and now Angst battled for third. Eight laps completed saw Angst and Scharkey now side by side for the second spot and Cummins moving past Schott for fourth. The yellow flew on lap ten and on the restart Sorensen led with Angst in second. Out of four for lap eleven Angst took over the lead with Scharkey in third behind Sorensen. Twelve down and Sorensen started to fight back for the lead as another caution flew. On the restart Sorensen held the point with Angst and Scharkey battling for second. Bob Timm came to life and worked around Steve Wetzstein for the fifth spot. Seventeen down and Angst again held onto second while Timm moved past Cummins for fourth. Sorensen was flying on the high side by this time and slowly pulled away for the win over Angst and Scharkey.

Shaun Walski led from the drop of the green in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods with Kylie Kath and Colter Duetsch racing for second. The clouds started to open up with a very light sprinkle coming down at the start of the race. A caution with two down saw Kath take the lead with Greg Mattick in second. Mattick took the lead on the next lap as he shot below Kath. The two raced hard and made contact on lap three down the back straight. Kath dropped back slightly from the contact while Mattick held onto the lead. behind Mattick Walski and Brandon Hare raced for second. These two caught up to the leader with five down and raced three wide for the top spot. lap six saw Hare drop back and Mattick and Walski racing for the lead. Tyler Groenedyk moved up to race Hare for third as Walski took over the top spot. Groenedyk took over the third spot and on the next lap moved past Mattick to take over second. A restart with eight to go saw Groenedyk take over the lead with Walski in second. hare moved into third with ten down while Ben Moudry made it inside the top five. With twelve laps completed the rains came down heavier with the race being called complete Groenedyk took home the win followed by Walski and Hare.
